Florida HMO plans are available in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach. Martin and St. Lucie counties only. Plans include dental and vision with complete optional maternity coverage

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans are not as widespread in Florida as they are in other states. Coverage is limited to Southeast Florida.

Do not dismiss HMO coverage. If you are looking for the single copayment for everything without any hidden extras, this type of coverage could work well for you.

HMO plans in Florida differ from PPO plans in the following ways:

1. You must use the HMO's doctors and facilities. Medical care outside the system is not covered (with the exception of life and death emergencies).

2. An HMO uses a Primary Care Physician (PCP) as the physician you see for all of your health care needs. The PCP will decide if specialty care is required and make the necessary referrals. In most plans a pediatrician can be a child's PCP and at least one visit to the gynecologist is permitted without a referral.

3. The insured pays a single co-pay for an office visit. This co-pay will cover all care at that visit. There are generally no hidden or extra fees for testing or office based procedures.

4. The plans include dental and vision care.

5. Emergency room visits are covered with a single co-pay. You do not have to meet a deductible for the emergency room.

6. Well-care visits are covered. You simply pay the office visit co-pay.

7. There are essentially no deductibles. Everything is a co-pay. Although, there are low-cost or "economy" plans that have a small hospital deductible in exchange for lower premiums.

8. Our HMO plan has a complete maternity rider as an option.

If you have a good primary care physician, Florida HMO plans can be a positive experience and provide comprehensive care for a relatively low cost. Certainly, if you are looking to limit your out of pocket costs for health care, an HMO can provide the answer.
