Should I Call an Agent or Go Direct to a Florida Health Insurance Company?
Intuitively, most people feel that if they call a company directly they will get a better buy. However, when it comes to health insurance, this is never the case.
Buying health insurance is not like buying a car. You cannot bargain when it comes to price. There is no dickering over the rates.
Florida health insurance rates are submitted to the states’s department of insurance (or similar agency) and then approved or disapproved. They stay constant until a new rate schedule is submitted.
This means that if I am 40 years old, live in Miami and call up Humana for a quote on a $1,000 deductible Portrait plan, the rates will be the same from Humana as they will from the 10,000 agents who offer the Humana plans. It will not be one penny less or one penny more.
So, if the price is the same, why should I use an agent?
When you talk to an insurance company directly, you are speaking to a relatively inexperienced hourly clerk. They might have been on the job for a month, do not have an in-depth knowledge of underwriting, will not recommend their company’s lower cost plans and they only sell their company’s products.
Let me simplify this for you:
The insurance company phone rep is generally inexperienced. They have a lot of turnover. I have been doing this for 20 years.
They will not know how to tailor a product to your needs. They will start with and try to sell you their most expensive plan. A good agent will offer you a number of different plans and deductibles so you can see the cost spread.
An agent will carefully explain the benefits to you. Most people have no idea what they are buying or have bought when they go direct to an insurance carrier.
The direct insurance carrier representatives have little or no knowledge of underwriting and cannot advise you in regards to filling out an application to your advantage or if you are even going to be accepted. They do not care if you are declined or have to explain your decline to the next company you apply to. Remember, their loyalty is to the insurance carrier while I am representing you.
They can only sell their own product line. An agent generally represents many different companies and can offer you dozens of different plans.
It costs nothing to have an independent, experienced agent shop for you.
The next time you call the insurance carrier, you will get a different representative. I have been answering the phone at the same number for many years. I am there if you have a problem.
When you get a rate increase, the insurance company will not recommend a different carrier, I will.
Many people call me up and tell me that they cannot get health insurance. Yet, I am able to insure them. Why? Because I teach them how to handle an underwriting interview, get medical records corrected and find companies that have different underwriting standards.
I think you are starting to get the picture. A health insurance agent, a good one that is, will work for you and help you get covered at the lowest possible premium. Our business depends on it.
