Florida health insurance limited benefit plans – what are they and who should use them
Florida health insurance is medically underwritten. Therefore, many of you will not be eligible to obtain a health insurance plan due to a more serious pre-existing condition. However, you would still qualify for a guaranteed issue plan.
In Florida, there are a few options for guaranteed issue health insurance.
-
You can obtain a plan through your employer’s group health insurance policy
-
You can take COBRA (a continuation of your group health insurance) when you leave your job
-
You can continue your COBRA through a special, albeit expensive continuation plan.
-
You might qualify for Florida Medicaid
-
Finally, you might be eligible for a limited benefit health insurance plan.
Ideally, you want your Florida health insurance plan to be full major medical coverage. This essentially means that there will be a deductible, a small amount of coinsurance (the 80/20 thing) and then 100% coverage up to several million dollars.
A Florida limited health insurance plan, sometimes called a Florida mini medical plan, is somewhat different.
These plans pay out for medical expenses based on a pre-defined schedule. There are defined limits for office visits, lab work, hospital stays, etc. The exact limits vary from plan to plan.
For example, one of our plans will pay out $100 per office visit for up to seven visits per year. The same plan pay up to $400 for a lab or x-ray, five times a year. If you were hospitalized, there would be a daily benefit paid for your hospital stay. The hospitalization can vary by plan and would range from $500 to over $4500 per day. There are other benefits (prescriptions, surgical, etc) as well.
Clearly, if you can obtain a traditional Florida health insurance plan (major medical), it would be in your best interest. But, if this is not possible, you want the best Florida limited health insurance plan you can afford.
I do not want to confuse the issue any more than I need to, but we also have a Florida health insurance plan that is not completely guaranteed issue, yet will take a number of individuals that will not normally be accepted for health insurance in Florida. This plan has much higher payout's than a limited benefit plan, yet it is not full major medical. You would need to talk with me directly to determine your eligibility.
It is also possible to add certain riders or add-on plans to a Florida limited health insurance plan that will enhance the benefits. These riders are not very expensive and move the plan closer to full coverage.
We have a separate web site devoted specifically to guaranteed issue health insurance plans. You can read more about them at www.guaranteed-health-insurance.com.
I realize that being declined for a Florida health insurance plan can really shake you up. Nobody wants to go without some type of health insurance. Please call me to discuss your specific situation. We have been able to help many individuals get full coverage who have been previously declined.
