Florida Health Insurance – The Hidden Danger of Group Health Insurance

Florida health insurance is medically underwritten and many of you who are reading this article have been declined for health insurance or have had one or more condition excluded from their plan.

The safety of a guaranteed issue group health insurance plan is the only choice for someone who has been medically declined. But, you need to understand that there are hidden dangers in group health insurance.

If your Florida health insurance plan is tied to your job, you better hope and pray you can keep working.

- If you get sick and cannot work anymore, you will lose your job and your health insurance.

- If your employer decides that group health insurance is too expensive, you lose your plan and lose your opportunity for COBRA.

- If you are fired or get laid-off, you will lose your health insurance.

- If you want to retire before 65 and have a medical condition, you will be forced to continue working.

Sometimes, you can COBRA your health insurance for 18 - 36 months after you stop working. But, COBRA is very expensive. If, you are somehow able to hold on to the COBRA for the full period, you are then eligible for a HIPAA continuation plan. This plan will be even more expensive than COBRA. Are you working yet? Can you afford health insurance premiums that look like mortgage payments. No, then you are screwed.

Now you have lost your health insurance, and, since you are sick, you cannot get private health insurance (or cannot afford it).

Want to avoid this health insurance disaster?
Want to not become a statistic that Michael Moore can use in his films?
Want to always have health insurance at a reasonable cost and not rely on the whims of an employer?

The answer lies with a private HSA (Health Savings Account) health insurance plan. If you can get the cooperation of your employer, so much the better.

Health Savings Accounts are a win-win for both you and your employer.

Simply purchase a private HSA plan when you and your family are healthy. These plans are the most cost effective plan design you can buy. Your employer supports you in one or more of the following ways:

  1. Your employer sets up a special account that allows them to contribute a fixed amount to your health savings account each year. These funds will pay for your routine medical expenses. Any money left over stays in your account and carries forward. Over time, you can build up a sizable reserve.

  1. A premium only Section 125 plan is created that allows you to pay your health insurance premiums with pre-tax money.

You end up with a Florida health insurance plan that cannot be canceled unless you do not pay your premiums. But, the premiums are at least half the cost of COBRA or a continuation plan.

Your employer does not have to worry about the high cost of group health insurance or the administration of a plan. A sick employee does not raise the cost of everyone’s health insurance to the point where nobody can afford it.

Let me ask you this. If you needed life insurance to protect your family in case you died, would you want to have the life insurance stop when you got sick and could not work anymore? Wouldn't that be completely idiotic?

So, why would you want to have a Florida health insurance plan that might have premiums you cannot afford if you got sick? Just when you needed it the most, you would lose your health insurance. Do you really believe the government is going to help you? Ever try to get on Social Security Disability? You need to hire an attorney and have one foot in the grave to get it.

If your employer is cooperative, I strongly suggest you approach them about having your own health insurance and getting them to provide you with a “health insurance allowance”. It is safer for you and in the long run cheaper for both you and your employer.

*Please note, the awkward use of the term Florida health insurance throughout this article was solely for the benefit of the search engines. I do apologize for repeating this term, “Florida health insurance” when it did not seem appropriate.
