Florida Health Insurance Underwriting – Cancer

Part 1 of the Florida Health Insurance Underwriting Series– Florida Health Insurance and Cancer

Contrary to what many of you might think, the prospects of obtaining a Florida health insurance plan after cancer is not all that impossible. We routinely write health insurance plans for cancer survivors every day.

Cancer survivors routinely obtain private health insurance.

The ability to obtain a private florida health insurance plan after successful treatment of their cancer depends on a number of factors.

  1. The type and level of cancer
  2. How widely it spread or metastasized
  3. Last date of treatment
  4. Other medical issues
  5. Lifestyle (smoking, overweight)
  6. Carrier

A Note on a Cancer Cure

Technically speaking, it is impossible to determine if cancer is cured. It can be undetected where the physician’s instruments look. But, cancer cells could have moved and remain undetected for an indeterminate period of time. The reoccurrence of a successfully treated cancer is usually represented as a probability. For the purposes of this discussion, we will consider a cure to be no evidence of the cancer and no treatment required other than a routine physical.

Type of Cancer

With certain types of cancer you have a better chance of obtaining Florida health insurance coverage than others. Breast cancer or example, will usually be an automatic decline if was classified as Stage II, III or IV. However, a Stage 0 or I can be covered in as little as two years after the last treatment.

Stomach, testicular, kidney and colon cancer can also be covered 5 years after clearance.

Last Date of Treatment

The dates used by underwriting are the very last day treatment was received. The clock starts from that point forward. If you take a maintenance medication, you will not obtain coverage.

Other Factors

If you smoke, are overweight or have other medical issues, these will all be weighed in making a final underwriting decision.

Carrier

You will find that different carriers have different standards for whom they will accept and reject. We have the underwriting guidelines and will steer you towards the carrier with the greatest possibility of acceptance.

We try to get some guidance from underwriting before we present an application. However, most of the time we will either hear “forget it” or “send it in and we will look at it”. It is very difficult to get much more information without a complete review of the records.
