Florida Health Insurance Underwriting – Obesity

Part 2 of the Florida Health Insurance Underwriting Series– Florida Health Insurance and Weight

Florida health insurance is, as most of you know, medically underwritten, and has height – weight guidelines.

Let me share a few comments we have heard in the past:

“I am not heavy, I am just a big guy.”
  “It's all muscle.”
“I know I am overweight but I have never been sick in my life.”
“I am a little bit on the heavy side.” Then I ask, “How tall you are and how much do you weigh?” “I am 5’5” and about 240. I know I should lose about 30 pounds.”
“If I lose 100 pounds will you lower the rate?”

Look, there is no one more sympathetic to the struggles of losing weight than me. If it were my decision, I would give (sell) everyone health insurance. But the insurance carriers live and die with their weight tables. All they care about is how tall you are and how much you weigh.

How Much Can I Weigh?

You do not have be “skinny” to get health insurance. Some carriers have, what I would consider, pretty liberal guidelines.

You have to remember that you can be a bit overweight and still get health insurance. The only consequence is that you will pay extra for it.

Let me give some examples. I don’t want to put in the entire table but this will help.

Here are some absolute maximum weights:

5’2”     229
5’5”     252
5’10”   292
6’0”     309

You can see that you don’t exactly have to be a ballet dancer to get health insurance. You can be a middle linebacker.

Complications

If you have high blood pressure or smoke, and you are pushing the table limits, chances are you will not get covered. But, then again, if you are 5’5”, 250, smoke and have high blood pressure, you need life insurance not health insurance.

Plus, after a certain weight, you can expect premium increases of 25% to 50% over standard rates.

What If I Lose Weight?

If you lose weight and want to be re-evaluated, the weight has to be off for a full 12 months. In addition, the weight loss should be documented by your physician. That way there is an official record of the before and after.

If you have additional questions about weight or any pre-existing condition, give us a call at 800-272-0512. We are here from 9 AM to 8 PM Mon – Fri.
