Seriously, there is no plan. Wait, let me say this one again because I still get calls every day for this.
The state of Florida does not have a health insurance plan. They do not provide any insurance other than Medicaid. Florida is broke. They cannot afford a health insurance plan.
Now that you understand that Florida will not be providing you with health insurance, you need to examine your realistic alternatives.
Just like anything else you buy, you can spend a lot on health insurance or a little. It all depends on what you feel you need. But I will tell you right now that low deductible plans with small copays are a luxurious indulgence that most cannot afford and the rest do not need.
If you examine your health insurance priorities truthfully, you will come to the conclusion that:
- You need coverage to protect your assets. You cannot afford a $35,000 hospital bill. But, if push comes to shove, you can somehow pay off a $10,000 bill.
- You want to have access to the best doctors. You know that is only going to happen if you have health insurance.
Of course you can get lower deductibles or you could buy a hospital supplement to help pay off the deductible. The latter being the most prudent choice.
If you have a medical issue that prevents you from getting health insurance or makes it too expensive, there is a federal plan available.
Another choice is to use a limited health insurance plan in conjunction with some supplemental coverage. This is often a fraction of the cost of a guaranteed issue health insurance plan.
The important thing to understand is that you do have choices. State supplied health insurance was an experiment that did not work. But, it is not a reason to forgo health insurance altogether.
