If you are declined for a Florida health insurance plan, you do have options.
Florida Health Insurance Plans with No Medical Questions
If you live in Florida and want a private, non-group health insurance plan, you must qualify medically to obtain it.
If you have routine, controlled high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, etc., you should have no difficulty obtaining Florida health insurance. Again, the operative word is “controlled”.
However, if you have had a heart attack, cancer, hepatitis and a list of a thousand other medical issues, or do not conform to the insurer’s weight charts, you will need a guaranteed issue Florida health insurance plan.
Let’s look at the options available to you.
Option 1 – Florida Group Health Insurance
The first option is obvious. If you are able to purchase Florida group health insurance through your employer, there will be no medical underwriting. Group health insurance in Florida is guaranteed issue as opposed to regular, individual Florida health insurance. In other words, all eligible employees are covered regardless of their medical issues.
Unfortunately, not everyone has access to this type of plan. Furthermore, family coverage is usually very expensive.
Option 2 – Limited Benefit Florida Health Insurance Plans
If you do not have group health insurance as an option, you might still be able to obtain a limited benefit or mini-medical plan.
These plans are HIPAA qualified PPO health insurance plans. Some have co-pays and extensive coverage. However, they do have limits on their benefit maximums.
For example, some plans will pay out up to a maximum of $1500 a year for prescriptions or limit office visits to 10 a year and so forth.
The good news is that these plans are guaranteed issue and there are no medical questions. There is a fairly good web site devoted to these plans at www.guaranteed-health-insurance.com.
Option 3 – Federal Plans Until 2014
The government has a plan available to you if you have not had health insurance for a least 6 months and have a condition that prevents you from obtaining health insurance.
If you have just come off of COBRA or COBRA is too expensive, you simply buy one of our guaranteed issue mini-medical type plans. They are not considered credible health insurance and you do not have to report them to the government.
After 6 months on our plan you simply drop it and buy the federal plan.
Summary
Just because one company denied you coverage does not mean that all of them will. We have a lot of underwriting experience and should be able to tell you up front if you need a guaranteed issue plan or not. We can also help you explore the options if you are denied for a Florida health insurance plan.
