Florida Health Insurance and Prescription Coverage

You won’t cover my prescriptions? Then what the hell do I need your insurance for?”

While most of you realize that any individual making this statement is not exactly a mental giant, it is a sentiment we hear time and time again.

Florida health insurance plans as well as health insurance in any other state, has a unique and singular purpose. That is, to mitigate or reduce your liability in the event of a medical catastrophe. This is no different than home owners or auto insurance. Anything else that it covers is an option that you will pay dearly for.

Let me digress for a moment. The notion that there is a “big brother” or father/mother figure out there that will wipe your nose, pay your medical bills, make sure your mortgage payments don’t get out of hand, etc., is a fairy tale. We do not have entitlement programs unless you are poor. Then there are things like Medicaid which will cover you completely.

Florida health insurance will cover your prescriptions under certain circumstances:

On most plans, prescriptions are covered once an annual deductible of $500 or $1,000 is met. This prevents you from the financial liability of paying for specialized prescriptions.

All Florida health insurance plans include discount plans that will permit you to purchase your prescriptions at the lowest possible cost.

Many Florida health insurance plans will cover generic prescriptions at a fixed co-pay of $10 to $15. Although, you can often buy generics for less in Wal-Mart.

Finally, some plans offer an option of fixed co-pays for brand name drugs. The cost of this option is usually higher than the deductible. It is rarely taken.

If your Florida health insurance plan has deductibles or lacks brand name prescription coverage, you should investigate the use of generic substitutes. Sometimes, all that is necessary is to inform your physician that you are covered for generics but are paying out of pocket for brand name. In many instances they will switch you to a generic with no ill effect.

We have a few standalone prescription plans that you can investigate. Keep in mind that if you are taking a very expensive prescription, the best you can hope for is a reduction in cost.
