Avoiding Florida Health Insurance Problems

The movie SICKO, although biased and based on a handful of cases that were 10 to 15 years old, does raise of few important points about health insurance. If you want to avoid a lot of problems when filing a claim for health insurance, follow a few simple rules.

1.

Stay away from HMOs. In Florida, HMO network coverage is very limited. HMO's have a higher probability of denying more expensive, yet more beneficial treatments plans. They prevent you from seeing the best doctors and will throw you out of the hospital a lot sooner than a PPO will.

2.
When filling in an application for a Florida health insurance plan, tell them everything. No, it is not alright to leave out prior illnesses, test results, etc. If you have a major claim, the carrier will want to check the validity of your application. If you leave something out, they might be able to deny the claim or even cancel you. You might have to work harder by making a call or two to prior physicians to get dates, illnesses, etc. Do not get lazy. Once you have revealed everything and they issue the policy, they cannot come back at you later on to deny a claim.
3.
Whenever possible, use Florida health insurance carriers that are not association plans. You can easily tell by looking at the application or asking the agent. Is there an association fee? Is there a paragraph on the application that says the plan is not controlled by Florida? You want a Florida controlled plan.
4.
Unless you are very organized (obsessive), have your premiums taken directly from a checking account. If the carrier does not send you a bill and you miss a payment, you can be dropped. Imagine having a clerk come to your hospital room to tell you that you do not have any insurance. Stop being paranoid. They will not clean out your bank account.
5.
Florida health insurance plans will not pay for experimental procedures or drugs. They never have and they never will. The answer to this problem is either a Critical Illness or Cancer Plan. Either one will give you a lump sum of money upon diagnosis. A plan that will put $50,000 to $100,000 in your pocket is not that expensive. It gives you the funds to pay for experimental procedures or just the extra funds you might need if you get sick and cannot work. Ask me about these plans.
6.
Understand your coverage. Pre-existing conditions are usually not covered for the first 12 months (unless you have had prior coverage without a break of more than 63 days). In some instances, they are never covered due to exclusion riders. Ask the agent what this means.
7.
Buy Florida health insurance coverage. I know this seems like a no brainer, but of the many uninsured in this country, a large number of them just do not want to spend the money. They can afford it, they just do not want to spend it. Don't be an ass. At least buy a high deductible plan to cover you in case of a major problem.

If you have come to the US from a country that has national health care and you miss it, leave. We will miss you but we understand. If you want to stay, enjoy our lower taxation and live in the best country in the world, buy some health insurance.

Most people in this country have health insurance. Many of those who do not have it, can afford it but are too cheap to spend the money. Then, there are many who are here illegally and do not have coverage. They are dying in Canada because of their waiting times for testing and specialists. Rulers and wealthy people from all over the world come to this country for treatment. National health insurance means it will be cheaper to have a baby but you will probably die waiting for treatment from a serious illness. When you get something for free, it is worth every penny you paid for it.
